Shazam! is the most consistently entertaining film Warner Bros has released as part of their DC Extended Universe tales. It’s an enjoyable lark that taps into some pretty sensational giddy juvenile wonders, it’s massive heart overflowing in themes about kindness, responsibility, friendship and family that are nothing short of timeless.
Batman is a great superhero film that features outstanding direction from Tim Burton and superlative performances from Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton. While certainly a product of its era, the film has still withstood the test of time marvelously.
From this point forward Green Book will always be judged by its Best Picture win at the 91st Academy Awards more than it will be assessed via the weighing of its various strengths and weaknesses.
Creed II feels more like a Rocky sequel than it does a direct follow-up to 2015’s Academy Award-nominated Creed, but that doesn’t make it any less entertaining.
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is growing on me. It’s still a strange movie that has way too much going on and one that never quite gets a handle on all of its various story elements. But it’s made with imagination and flair, and as a purely visual exercise much of it truly is delightful.
I like The Meg. I enjoy watching Jason Statham and his ragtag team of charming eccentrics battle their megalodon to the death. An unabashedly silly movie, Jon Turteltaub’s crazy little giant shark action spectacular almost can’t help but make me smile.
In many ways Ocean’s Eight is slowly climbing up my list of 2018 favorites. I just really love watching it, the joy it makes me feel when it comes to an end almost indescribable.
Marrowbone is a spellbinding gothic drama overflowing in suspense, dread, pathos, romance and honest to goodness human sentiment. It is a sensational piece of genre subterfuge, the narrative an increasingly byzantine maze overflowing in deft twists and turns.
Having now re-watched all five of the Mission: Impossible films, I can say definitively that Ghost Protocol is my favorite in the series up to this point.
